I am a northern California native who ended up studying art in Chicago, IL for three years. I was restless from staying in one place so long, tired of the city, and feeling the need to get some dirt on my hands and some mountains in my site.
I had been with my partner Thomas for two years when we had a conversation about what to do with the next phases of our lives as individuals and as a couple. We had both been feeling stuck, frustrated, and ready to get out of the city. When we thought about what made us happiest the answers came pretty quickly. For Thomas it was riding his bicycle (he's one of those year-round, rain or snow commuter types). For me it was traveling.
Fast forward three months and we are just a few weeks away from the two month long trip that will take is from California's coast alllll the way over to the Atlantic shore. Thomas (clearly the tough one) will be riding his bike from Ventura, CA to Cape Cod, MA camping and couch-surfing along the way. I will be driving my trusty Outback and volunteering on organic farms through WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms). We're both (supposedly) going to be blogging about our trips, but I'd take it as a pleasant turn of events if our fingers didn't touch a keypad or keyboard until we smelled the ocean again.
There are really two main reasons for writing about this trip:
1. for family and friends to know that I am still alive and well
2. for like-minded people to know where to find me, how to get in touch with me, and come travel with me for any portion of the trip.
